Yixue Yang, born in Wuhan, China, and currently based in Sunderland, UK, is a contemporary artist specialising in ceramics. She is pursuing a PhD in Glass and Ceramics at the University of Sunderland, where her research centres on the Daoist concept of “Wu” (non-being) and its multifaceted expression in contemporary art.

Yixue’s work explores the dynamic interplay between “non-being” and “being,” using clay as a medium to articulate the dialogue between negative space and form. Through her practice, she uncovers the hidden potential within materiality, employing the natural transformations of clay, fire, and glaze to imbue her works with an unpredictable vitality. Rooted in the Daoist philosophy of “effortless action” (Wu Wei), her process balances control and surrender, allowing the materials to guide the outcome.

Her works have been exhibited in the UK, Spain, Italy, and China, bridging Eastern philosophy with Western contemporary art. By reflecting on the fluidity of culture and the formation of identity, Yixue invites viewers to engage with the subtle rhythms and latent possibilities that emerge at the intersection of matter, philosophy, and cultural exchange.
