Yixue Yang
Artist (Ceramics & Glass)

Yixue Yang, born in Wuhan, China, and currently based in Sunderland, UK, is a contemporary artist working with both ceramics and glass. She is pursuing a PhD in Glass and Ceramics at the University of Sunderland, where her research centres on the Daoist concept of “Wu” (non-being) and its multifaceted expression in contemporary art.

Yixue’s practice explores the dynamic interplay between “non-being” and “being,” using clay and glass as parallel material languages to articulate the tension between absence and presence, solidity and fragility. Through ceramics, she examines how negative space and form co-construct meaning; through lampworked and flame-shaped glass, she captures the ephemerality, transparency, and boundary-like qualities of Wu.

Guided by the Daoist notion of “effortless action” (Wu Wei), her process embraces both precision and surrender—allowing fire, flux, and gravity to participate in shaping the final work. Her glass often becomes a medium of subtle containment or poetic exposure, encasing found objects or revealing inner voids.

Her works have been exhibited in the UK, Spain, Italy, and China, bridging Eastern philosophy with Western contemporary art. By reflecting on the fluidity of culture and the shifting nature of identity, Yixue invites viewers to engage with the quiet rhythms and latent tensions that emerge where matter, thought, and transformation converge.
